About Us
The Church of Jesus Christ has a high calling: to make disciples of a fallen world. As individuals, we each have some sphere of influence, and one definition of leadership is to use our gifts to effect positive change around us, regardless of position, status or title. The Emmaus movement aims to inspire and challenge individual Christians to get involved and make a difference... in a world starved of love. Congregations beware: individuals who return from an Emmaus experience are enthusiastic about playing an active role in the Church!
This life is about getting ready for the life that is to come, eternal life. The role of the Church as a whole is to help us as individuals make the change! And the role of the Emmaus movement is to serve the Church in its task, by offering inspiration and leadership-building opportunities to the Church... The Emmaus movement is not a church - it serves the Church. It is training ground for the Church, to grow its members in the many aspects of leadership. It starts with a unique experience of what it feels like to be loved by God and His people - with a love that forgives anything, heals old wounds, renews and transforms. And then it offers you the opportunity to learn how to love like that... What the world needs now (as the song goes) is love. But it is also desperate for good leadership. For it is leadership that will transform the world from what it is to what it should be - what it was intended to be by its Creator.
The Papillon Emmaus Community has more than 1000 members, based in the region between Gloriosa and Lourie Communities in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa, with many members having come from these donor Communities. To date, Papillon runs Walk to Emmaus and Chrysalis Flight weekends annually, programmes owned by Upper Room Ministries®.
Papillon currently consists mainly of 3 towns: Belfast, Middelburg and Witbank (Emalahleni). The Community remains one of the most northern in South Africa, and has great potential for growing the Emmaus movement into the mining and farming regions of Mpumalanga province. Towns identified for immediate outreach are: Ermelo, Bethal, Kriel, Secunda and Groblersdal.
What is the Walk to Emmaus?
In Luke 24: 13-35, we read about two disciples travelling from Jerusalem to the town of Emmaus, who are joined by the risen Christ. Jesus explained the Scriptures and all that had happened to Him, warming their hearts. But they only recognised Him when Christ took bread, blessed and broke it, then gave it to them. Filled with joy, they rushed back to Jerusalem to share the news with the other disciples.
The Walk to Emmaus is a spiritual renewal programme intended to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. The Walk to Emmaus experience begins with a 72-hour short course in Christianity, comprised of 15 talks by laymen and clergy on the themes of God's grace, disciplines of Christian discipleship, and what it means to be the Church. The course is wrapped in prayer and meditation, special times of worship and the daily celebration of Holy Communion. The Emmaus Community, made up of those who have attended an Emmaus® weekend, support the 72-hour experience with a prayer vigil, by preparing and serving meals, and other acts of love and self-giving. What is Chrysalis?
Chrysalis is the name chosen for the Youth Walk to Emmaus because it symbolises growing faith in the lives of high school and college-aged young adults - the spiritual growth that is necessary between adolescence and adulthood. It is a crucial time of maturing faith for discipleship. [3dayol.org]
